Trinidad & Tobago says it is prepared to hold talks with Iran and Russia as it seeks to make maximum financial returns from its sale of natural gas on the international market. Minister of Energy and Energy Industries Conrad Enill, speaking on a local television programme yesterday, said these countries, along with Qatar and Brunei, controlled at least 60 per cent of the global gas production and were now seeking to strengthen their collaboration. He also acknowledged that these countries were "at different stages of development" and their democracies "are not what we are comfortable with or what we associate with".

But asked specifically whether Trinidad and Tobago would be willing to sit down with Iran given the various terrorist allegations made against the country by the United States, Enill said: "The reality is that we find ourselves in a situation where because we are a gas producer and these are gas-producing countries, we are now associated with that group of countries and if you are looking at gas security, security and supply and demand issues you need to sit down and talk with them."

In recent months, Trinidad and Tobago has relied on the sale of gas rather than oil for much of its revenue within the energy sector.
