French water and waste management group Veolia in early 2009 will launch the first biodiesel plant in France using recycled oil from the restaurant trade. The project comes at the time when other biofuels made from raw grains and oilseeds are accused of boosting food prices and their ability to cut greenhouse gases is being questioned. The plant in Limay, near Paris, would be Veolia's first move into the biofuels industry, Laurent Bromet, head of biofuels at the group told Reuters on the sidelines of a press conference. He predicted that cooking oil could account in the future for 5 or 6 percent of biodiesel production in France. 'Its a niche but an interesting one,' he said.
The production site, in which Veolia has invested 25 million euros ($34.15 million), will be supported by a partnership with French cooking oil manufacturer Lesieur to collect used oil from restaurants. Veolia expects the new plant to produce 20,000 tonnes of biodiesel next year, en route to reaching its authorised capacity of 60,000 tonnes, he explained.
